The eBook of Take a Chance On Me, Book 1 in the Something New Series, is on sale for only $1.99 from now until June 6th, and I thought it would be kind of fun to share some behind the scenes and how the series was born.
Fun fact 1: It was never intended to be a series. A
million five years ago I was in between projects and thought it would be fun to write a short little story about a bride running away from her wedding and having a one-night stand. My idea was one night with a hot bartender in a town in the middle of nowhere and the story would end with her taking off for parts unknown the next morning. It was supposed to be a sexual awakening type of story. A little slice of a life. That was the plan—and then Mitch and Maddie started talking and for the love of god, they would not shut up. I kept trying to push them into the office for some hot, dirty sex but they wouldn’t go. They just kept talking, and talking, and talking. So I gave up the ghost and Take a Chance on Me was born.
Fun fact 2: I did not plan any of the reveals in the story. Every single one of them came as a surprise to me as I was writing. I mean, I’ve always been a pantser, but this was ridiculous. I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone that hasn’t read the book, but Mitch’s father came out of left field and I was like… hey, what did you just say?
Fun fact 3: Once I started getting into the family aspects of the story I decided that I was going to write a redemption story for Mitch’s father, but that bastard never cooperated. I guess some people are just meant to be bad.
Fun fact 4: As soon as Gracie Roberts, Mitch’s neighbor, popped onto the scene I knew I was going to write a series The second James came onto the page I knew they were destine to be together. And I knew they’d
hate love every second of their courtship. (James and Gracie’s book, The Name of the Game, will be released September 29th.)
Fun Fact 5: Steve, Maddie’s ex-fiancé, was originally going to be a much bigger part of the story and I was going to hook him up with his worst nightmare, a girl named Holly. In my mind Steve was a bit of a prig, and so very neat and proper, so naturally I wanted him to fall for a trash talking, scantily clad, volatile woman to help him take the edge off. Even now I still love the idea, unfortunately, it was one of those things that I could never get to translate properly on the page. Hmmm… that gives me an idea… maybe I can dig up some of that story and share it with my newsletter subscribers **Hint Hint Nudge nudge** We’ll see, it might be too terrible to share, but maybe.
Fun Fact 6: Maddie used to have a 4th brother. His name was Adian and he was trolling around Europe, a lost loner. But when I finished the book I realized all Maddie’s other brothers were formulated in my mind, and I could visualize them as fully fleshed out characters. Adian was just one big hazy mystery to me so I cut him, ruthlessly and without remorse, like a heartless bitch.
Fun Fact 7: Maddie’s friends, Penelope and Sophie, were not part of the original story. They were added on, I think, in the 4th draft of the book and now I can’t imagine the series without them.
So, as you can see, the path to writing a book and series is never a straight and narrow road. It was a fun and twisty path. If you’ve never read Take a Chance on Me, now’s a good time to check it out at a bargain basement price. And, if you’re interested, I give out a free copy of one of my books every month in my newsletter just for being a subscriber. Sign up, and maybe you’ll be a lucky winner.
I hope you enjoyed this little trip down memory lane, I know I did!
